Capital Beltway Project Team Focuses on Safety, Speed, and Public Outreach

The Fluor-Lane construction team, as part of the I-495/Capital Beltway HOT Lanes Project, shut down a major thoroughfare over the June 11 weekend and safely and quickly removed the old southbound I-495 bridge over Chain Bridge Road.

Chain Bridge Road feeds Tysons Corner, the largest business and retail district in the region, employing more than 600,000 people. Despite the seemingly major interruption to this travel artery, not a single complaint was registered by business, motorists, or area residents.

The project team ensured that more than 140,000 employees and nearby residents were made aware of the weekend closure and detour options by targeting local media, blast email/fax, telephone, postcards, and door-to-door outreach. "Aside from the projects design public hearings in 2008, this outreach cam- paign was the largest on the project to date," said Fluor-Lane Project Director, Mitchell Lester. "Even on the weekends traffic is very heavy on this part of the Beltway. Because of our outreach and coordina- tion with VDOT and other projects, we were able to close down this part of Chain Bridge with minimal impact to motorists and businesses."

To minimize the disruption, Fluor-Lane focused the demolition on one weekend starting on Friday even- ing June 11 and ending Monday morning June 14. The team and demolition subcontractor Celtic Demolition Inc. did an outstanding job and finished the work 12 hours ahead of schedule. This is their first job on the Capital Beltway Project. Celtic is a small business located in Alexandria, Virginia. They are currently working with Fluor-Lane as they look to pursue VDOT SWaM certification.

With the old bridge now down, Fluor-Lane is building a new bridge and future HOT Lanes connection on this footprint. Later this year, northbound traffic will share the bridge now being used by southbound traf- fic. Once this switch occurs, the Fluor-Lane team will again close Chain Bridge Road for a weekend and dismantle the existing northbound bridge.
